Frequently Asked Questions

Are you considering dental implants? Please see these frequently asked questions and answers below.

Are dental implants suitable for me?

Dental implants are not suitable for everyone but my services includes an assessment of suitability on your first visit.

For some patients dental implants are not the best solution and a conventional bridge or a denture is the alternative.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants were invented by professor Branemark in Sweden in the early seventies.

Dental implants are made of Titanium (metal) or Zirconia (ceramic) which both have an unique
ability to connect with bone.

Once the dental implants have healed, I can create crowns, bridges or dentures to replace missing teeth.

Is it painful having dental implants placed?

The placement of dental implants is minor oral surgery and is done under cover of local anaesthetic and is generally not painful.

Dental implants are placed in bone which have far fewer nerves than teeth. When placing implants we can often use less anaesthetic injections than for other dental treatments, for example root canal treatment or extractions.

Are dental implants expensive?

A straight forward treatment with an implant and a crown cost from £2200. I use
Straumann, Neodent, Sweden and Martina and Zimmer Biomet implants.

How will I feel after having dental implants placed?

Some people get swelling and discomfort after the placement of dental implants. It is impossible to predict who will be affected by this.

Generally speaking, if there is any swelling and discomfort it is the worst after 2 days and then it quickly subsides.

Patients who have dental implants are advised to take Ibuprofen or similar for three days as it both reduces pain and reduces swelling

How long do dental implants last?

In a healthy patient, implants will last for around 20 years or more.

It is incredibly rare that a dental implant has to be removed unless it has been in place for many years.

How long does the treatment take?

In many cases teeth can be removed and replaced with a dental implant and crown Immediately.

No matter how long the treatment time span is you will only spend precious little time in a dental chair. Most of the treatment time is for healing after the procedure.

Will I be left without teeth at any stage?

The answer is only if we agree on it. For posterior teeth many patients can cope with being without a tooth for a while but in the smile line (the teeth that are visible when smiling), it is unacceptable and we make sure our patients are never left without their smile.
